Austin and Marfa, Texas, USA
July - August 2014
With time spent between Austin, Texas and Marfa in West Texas, I developed the catalogue essay for the slumped glass floor work: Coverage, to be exhibited at Craft Victoria and Brunswick Artspace in Melbourne when I returned.
Viewing the vast oil fields below on the way to Odessa airport, gave me the perspective I needed to consider the enormity of the resources we systematically extract from the ground which was, millenia ago, a delta region where rivers collided into what is now called the Permian Basin. Ancient nutrients were collected, stored and then transformed into what we know as fossil fuels.
In Marfa, I was able to connect with the work of Donald Judd, visit his studios, architecture office, library and the legacy he left, that which continues to be built upon by contemporary artists, at the Chinati Foundation in the Chihuahuan Desert.
